Designer clothing in Cheshire is a big deal. This county is packed with fabulous designer boutiques offering access to some of the world’s most exciting designer brands. Come with me as I take you on a designer boutique crawl in Cheshire.
So, where to start? Wilmslow, I think, at the marvellous Black White Denim. If you’re on the hunt for original and unusual designer clothing in Cheshire then this boutique just has to be on your list of places to visit. Black White Denim was founded by Joanna Davies in September 2009, with a very clear ethos at its heart. You can probably guess what… Joanna had recognised that within her social circle, women had a self-selected uniform of black, white and denim with an occasional colour splash provided by accessories. One of the key reasons we love this shop is that, like us, Joanna chooses her stock with a very firm eye on the future. For her, anything a customer chooses from her shop should be as staple an element of their wardrobe for years to come as it is when they bought it.
Jo is also pretty hot at spotting brands that offer a certain timeless quirkiness and a commitment to cut and quality. Oh, we can so relate!
Take Baum und Pfiergarten for example. This dashing Danish brand consistently produces pieces that tick all the design boxes…great prints, interesting shapes and fabulous fabrics. We love.
Let’s head up the road to Alderley Edge now, home of one of the great Cheshire boutiques, Tuula. Tuula may describe themselves as being all about Scandinavian fashion, but it’s more of a style statement, with a focus on the cool and minimal. We have a thing for their London brand Wyse, for example, which offers a collection of fun and funky cashmere knits that positively scream ‘multi-season.’
Tuula not only sell a fab range of casual, seasonal lovelies, but a great selection of home and gift items too, from gorgeous scented candles to message mugs – our current favourite being ‘I am woman. I am invincible…I am exhausted.’ Funny if it weren’t so true!
From Alderley Edge let’s move on to Macclesfield, and the marvellous Arabella. Founded more than 20 years ago by fashion addict Val Lacey, who has shops in Macclesfield and Nantwich, Arabella is a must-visit for ladies looking for labels you are unlikely to be very familiar with. Take Rundholtz for example. This German label can easily be described as ‘edgy’ and ‘statement’. It’s not for the shrinking violets among us, but if you like to stand out from the rest, are comfortable in your own skin and determined to be comfortable in your clothes too, it’s definitely worth a look. Macclesfield is a great little market town to visit on any day of the week, and often overlooked in favour of more famous neighbours, but if you’re planning a trip there, we definitely recommend you go on a Treacle Market Sunday. This amazing monthly open air market has dozens and dozens of stalls from local food producers, artists, artisans and craftspeople, making it a fabulous experience for those who love to potter about and make thrilling discoveries – and maybe purchase the odd thing or two too!
So, where next on our journey of discovery of Cheshire’s designer boutiques? Let’s nip over to Knutsford and drop in on Lucy Wilder, at Cocaranti. Lucy’s thing is denim, with a collection of fabulous jeans brands and a knowledge you’d have to go a long way to beat. She knows what will suit you best just by looking at you, we think! With collections from AG, Rag & Bone, Mother and Paige (to name-drop just a few) there’s great choice to be found. Cocaranti doesn’t just stock jeans of course, you will also find super-casual tops in that relaxed style we associate with California, dresses for easy-going days, jackets, jumpers and accessories, all with that laid-back vibe.
How familiar are you with Stockton Heath? For those that don’t know, this village on the edge of Warrington has become quite the sought-after postcode in the last decade or so, attracting wealthy young couples and families to its streets, which are well populated with excellent dining and shopping opportunities. We like relative newcomer Sorelle.
There’s a whole array of enticing discoveries to be made here, and the designers chosen don’t break the bank either – if you get my drift! Unlike many of the designer boutiques in Cheshire we’re visiting, Sorelle are aiming their offering at a slightly younger crowd, who haven’t yet discovered the ethos of ‘buy now, wear forever’ investment approach to fashion purchases! We’re not knocking this, of course, who doesn’t love it when they discover the perfect piece for the holidays and then the price that brings a smile to the face. There’s a lot of that going on here, and trust me, it’s not all for our daughters!
While you’re in Stockton Heath, you should also pop into Lemon Tree, on London Road. If you’re looking for well-known designer brands in Cheshire, they carry quite a collection, including Ted Baker, Hudson and InWear. There’s also a small men’s collection too, plus accessories for you and your home.
Not so far along the A49 from Stockton Heath is Tarporley, a totally gorgeous Cheshire village packed with fabulous designer fashion boutiques. You absolutely have to make a visit to Bottega when you’re in Tarporley. Hailed as the Liberty of the North (not a bad accolade for a store that could fit into half a single floor at the London emporium!) the multi-award winning Bottega is a cornucopia of delights, with clothing and accessories, homeware, jewellery, candles and fragrance all ready and waiting to be discovered. Stunning pieces from designer brands including RixLondon, Maison la Biche, and Donna Ida denim will draw you into a shudder of happiness – which you can then recover from with tea and cake in the Bottega café! Genius!
Also in Tarporley, you can find the fabulous Si Belle, which carries designer brands with some serious heritage. Halston Heritage takes the very best of the iconic shapes and designs of the 60’s and 70’s, and brings them to us with a contemporary twist. Another designer who started his career in the heady days of Studio 55 in New York is Elie Tahari – his collection is always luxurious and fabulously high end. Diane von Furstenberg’s DVF diffusion line and Cavalli’s Class join the line-up, among many others.
Tarporley also has its very own fashion designer in the very talented Sally Ellis, of SVE fashion. Creating an annual collection of couture pieces, Sally is ready and waiting to create your totally bespoke outfit for any very special occasion, from evening event to wedding day. Sally’s stunning designs offer the very best of couture, right here in Cheshire.
Time to head back down the M56 to Hale, via a quick detour to Bowdon, where you will find the most recent arrival on the local fashion scene at Society Boutique, which carries sassy fashions for women with a bit of oomph in their tails! Brands include the darkly delicious NU Denmark, feisty Blake Seven, sexy Kendall & Kylie shoes and Woden casual footwear. Jewellery from Cheshire’s own ChloBo, based in Chester, and Alderley Edge’s Kiki Minchin will help you complete your look in style.
Before we arrive back at 205 On Ashley, more than ready for a cup of tea, we have to visit the fabulous SeeSaw Lingerie on Ashley Road.Any women seeking to look great in any fashion purchase made at the designer boutiques we’ve visited knows she has to start with the basics – and that means underwear, ladies! Owner Johanna Bolhoven will guide you to the lingerie you need to not only ensure your curves are all in the right places and you have the support you need, but will make you feel feminine and sexy too. Brands include Marie Jo, Aubade and Fantasie and there’s some fabulous swimwear to be found too – so no more excuses for hiding under your towel by the pool this summer! We recommend all our customers make a visit to Johanna and her team; having a bra properly fitted makes not only a difference to the way your clothes fit, but to your health too. It’s amazing the number of ladies who come back to us and tell us that they had their bra size all wrong!
Of course, any designer boutique crawl of Cheshire has to take in the marvellous 205 On Ashley. Here for 25 years under its previous guide of Vicki Allen, the fashion boutique built a fine reputation for its brands and service. In 2017 we have undertaken a complete refurbishment of the shop and introduced some fabulous new brands, including Crea Concept and this AW17 we will have some designs specifically for the larger lady. While most of our designer brands make their clothes in larger sizes, sometimes the fit isn’t quite as good as we want it to be, so choosing a brand that designs specifically with curvy ladies in mind has been a key objective this year – and we’re thrilled to say we’ve found one! We’re not saying just who it is yet though…you’ll have to watch this space! You can find fabulous designs from favourite designer brands including Joseph Ribkoff, LauRie, Monari, Not Your Daughter’s Jeans and Just White here and our service is, I am proud to boast, the best you could imagine.
I do hope you take some inspiration from our fashion boutique tour of Cheshire – call in and tell us how it went one day soon!
Much love, Karen
